3 Truths for Assurance of Salvation: Truth 2 Aymone Kouame

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth … For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:14;16).

His grace abounds and abounds and abounds … and abounds.

I know the feeling. You wonder if today will be the day when God finally turns away from you for repeatedly falling into the same sin. But listen to what God says: “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20-21, ESV). You can never ‘outsin’ God’s grace for you in Christ Jesus. Jesus’s redemption covers all your sins. In him, God’s grace for you is not just sufficient, it is overflowing.

Should we then sin in order to obtain more grace?

This doesn’t mean we should sin more to receive more grace. God is not mocked. If we have Christ’ Spirit in us — as all who trust in him do — we cannot view God’s grace as a license to indulge in sin. Instead, Romans 5:20-21 is meant to give us confidence in the grace of God. It is indented to reassure that we can run to him with any and every sin and receive full forgiveness in Jesus. It is ‘so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness’ in us. Keep resisting sin and running to Jesus. He promised to finish the good work he has started in you.

From His Fullness

Jesus’ salvific work completely covers all who trust him. Think about the countless believers, past and present, whom His one act of righteousness justifies — a number that no one can count (Revelation 7:9). In him, we stand in never-ending grace and are covered in infinite perfect righteousness. How so? Because they flow from his fullness.

Jesus is infinite and eternal, the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last. It is from his fullness that we receive all the benefits of Salvation — and there is no end to his fullness. There are no bounds to his perfections in power, character and being. You have nothing to fear.

Until next time, think about this: It is from the fullness of Jesus that you receive ‘grace upon grace’ every day. Do you really think he can run out?
